I just learned about the Yongle Encyclopedia from librarian.net. Fascinating.
I went to the Career Fair today, and while I found no jobs even remotely related to the library field, I found a couple of jobs I could feasibly do for a couple of years before starting the whole grad school process, if I decide to wait.
Grade on Chemistry test: B+
Businesses that took my resume: 3
Businesses that saw "English Major" on my name tag and completely ignored me, while kissing up to my Accounting Major boyfriend: 5
Probability of me living in a cardboard box on the street next year: Medium High

There is a position open in the gov pubs section of my library. And of course, I am applying for it. Once again, keep your fingers crossed.
I am attending some workshops this week so I can better learn the databases we have, and hopefully in the process become more marketable (Hire me! I know PSYCHinfo!).

I applied for a really great job at the Northville District Library in Northville, MI. Everyone keep your fingers crossed!
In other news, the group project for my library administration class is to build a school library. Not physically, of course, but we have to do all of the planning that would be involved. It's been pretty intense so far. I was put in charge of getting prices for all of the non-book materials we would need...I didn't realize how much we would need until I opened up that big DEMCO catalog and started going through it. Yikes. And people think it's ok to cut library budgets.

When my whole section of the library got moved around, the Dean wanted to take away all of our computers, which would have been a real disadvantage for us, despite the loss of the porn guys. Thankfully, the kickass Assistant Dean was on our side, and we got to keep twelve computers in our section.
From what I hear, a few weeks ago the Dean was in our section doing some research on the microfilm machines. He needed to look something up on the computer, but he couldn't, because they were all occupied. Suddenly, we are getting eight more computers, bringing our grand total to twenty.

I think one of the really interesting things about applying to MLS grad programs is that no two schools seem to want the same information from their applicants. One school I am applying to only wants a personal statement and transcripts, while another wants a personal statement, transcripts, and 3 recommendations, and yet another wants all of this and the GRE. I was having a hard time keeping it all straight, so I gave each school a folder. Each folder has a list paperclipped to it with all of the requirements for each application. I cross off each requirement as I add it to the folder. I think this should be proof enough that I am librarian material.
Well, that and the fact that I am skipping the Superbowl to work in the library.

Oh library blog. How I have let you languish. I decided to pick this up again because there's a lot going on, and frankly, because I miss being part of the library blog world (yes, there IS a library blog world).
I applied for a job at the Monroe County Public Library. They called last week to say that they wanted me to fill out an official application for them. This is a good sign, right? I sent back the application, but no word yet on an interview.
I am also hard at work on the grad school applications. I should have Wayne State done this week. I think I might wait to hear back from them before I sent out my other apps. We'll see.
In other news...this isn't a library issue, except that it is, because free speech is always a library issue:

Microfilm. Lots and lots of microfilm. And it all has to be moved. Guess who gets to do it? I am dreading work tomorrow morning.
There was an older gentleman in my section today that came up to the desk, and he was very concerned because he had been working on the internet when a "terrible thing" popped up on the computer, which I am guessing is porn. He wouldn't let me look at it, so I ran to a supervisor and let her deal with it. I felt sorry for the guy; he was really shaken up about it and very concerned about "a young lady" like myself seeing it (if only he knew...). He was even holding a copy of the newspaper over the screen while he waited for my supervisor to come out. It's nice to know that not ALL of the older men that come into the library are there for the sole purpose of looking up porn.
